The TIP120 is a Darlington NPN Power Transistor. It functions like a normal NPN transistor but since it has Darlington Pair inside it can provide a good collector current of up to 5A and gain of over 1000. In Darlington Pair there are two transistors in which emitter of first transistor is connected to the base of the second transistor and collectors of both the transistors are connected together to form a Darlington pair. Due to high gain and good collector current, this NPN transistor is normally used to drive high current loads or where very high amplification is required. Since this transistor can be controlled by 5V applied at Base Emitter junction hence we can control it with a 5V microcontroller or any development board like Arduino Uno, Arduino Mega, ESP8266 NodeMCU etc. So, if you are looking for a transistor that could be easily controlled by a Logic device to switch high power loads or to amplify high current then this Transistor might be an ideal choice for your application.
