74HC163 Presettable Synchronous Binary Counter IC - SOIC-16 SMD Package

The 74HC163 is high-speed synchronous presettable binary counters with an internal look-ahead carry. These counters ensure synchronous operation by clocking all flip-flops simultaneously on the positive-going edge of the clock (CP). The outputs (Q0 to Q3) can be preset to either HIGH or LOW. When the parallel enable input (PE) is LOW, it disables counting and loads the data from the inputs (D0 to D3) into the counter on the clock's positive edge. This presetting occurs regardless of the levels at the count enable inputs (CEP and CET).

A LOW signal at the master reset input (MR) sets Q0 to Q3 to LOW after the next positive-going clock transition, irrespective of the levels at PE, CET, and CEP. This synchronous reset feature allows for easy modification of the maximum count using only one external NAND gate. The look-ahead carry simplifies the serial cascading of counters. Both CEP and CET must be HIGH for counting to proceed. The CET input enables the terminal count output (TC), which produces a HIGH output pulse approximately equal to a HIGH output of Q0, suitable for enabling the next cascaded stage.

Inputs are equipped with clamp diodes, allowing the use of current limiting resistors to interface inputs to voltages exceeding VCC.
